We were headed to Penang, feeling rather peckish, we pulled into my hometown, Kampar, looking for a banana leaf restaurant.

As the saying goes, where there’s a crowd, the food must be good. At 1.45PM, the place was still packed! So, we went in and got ourselves a place. We were immediately greeted by our server, who took our orders. And within minutes, we were served what we ordered.

I had the chicken briyani. The chicken was flavourful, and not too spicy, just right. Indian food is all about spice - tasting the different spices in each bite, and the way it complements and balances the flavours- , not being super spicy (hot,mala, etc.). It was spot on. Very homely flavours, like being invited to an Indian aunty’s house to have lunch.

Their payasam (dessert) was nice too! It wasn’t super sweet. Once again, well balanced! I would have gone for a second, but I had a long drive ahead.

Their banana leaf rice was homely too! My uncle and aunt loved it.

Overall, I’d say, the food was great, the servers were quick and helpful, the owners were very kind, and the place was clean. If it wasn’t for the long drive, I would have stayed for a second round!

Visit for breakfast. Didn't aware there are Capati so soft. Fish curry so thick. They have Tosai too. Delicious. Next time will try lunch. Keep it up.

Thank god there’s still good Indian food in Kampar town. Found this makan place that serves authentic south Indian food. Very homecooked feel. Loved the availability of healthy par boiled rice and other classic dishes. Banana leaf meal is available every Friday and Saturday only for lunchtime. Biriyani is cooked every Wednesday and Saturday as well. They open for business morning 6.15am.

I’ve been to a few banana leaf rice place around KL, and they’re either average, expensive or both.
Whenever I go back to my hometown (Kampar), I always frequent the Chinese restaurants because, come on, it’s Kampar.
This time I walked in to this banana leaf rice restaurant. According to my uncle, they started out as a small stall and expanded to a restaurant.
Now here’s something about food in Kampar. If you’re planning to open a food joint in Kampar, you better be good (or REALLY GOOD if you’re selling anything that is not Chinese food) because Kamparians won’t come back to your place if you’re just average.
Rajen was amazing. Their portions were generous, they provide loads of condiments and dried bits, taste is excellent and they are ridiculously cheap! It’s been a long long time since I had a hearty banana leaf rice meal and this was simply excellent!
If they keep on improving and add more meat varieties, they will be hard to beat, especially by the overpriced and overhyped joints in KL. I’d drive from KL to Kampar to have their rice anytime.
So yeah, go over to Kampar and enjoy their delicious banana leaf rice

It’s a great experience. The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. Amazing mango chutney, indian foods and service. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and make great recommendations. Friday and Saturday can get best banana leaf Indian food. Big Portion with affordable price.
