Kitty and I, along with a group of friends, recently visited the Jonker Street Night Market in Melaka, Malaysia. It was a sensory overload in the best way possible. The vibrant atmosphere was infectious, with bustling crowds and the mouthwatering aroma of street food filling the air. It was like a celebration of all things delicious. We loved the cheerful contrast of bright blue awnings over the food stalls against the warm tones of the buildings and the clear blue sky. It was truly inviting.

We especially enjoyed the Jonker Food Market Street, where all the hawker stalls were gathered together. It was a feast for the eyes and the stomach. We bought a variety of dishes from different stalls, like char kway teow, smelly tofu rojak, fried mee, yakitori, and more. Our friends also tried the different types of carrot cake, white and black. They even got curry mee and a mala xiangguo. It was a real smorgasbord of flavours.

The char kway teow and carrot cake, despite their appealing looks, felt a bit bland to us. Maybe this is the way how the carrot cake and the char kway teow are cooked in Malacca. As we bought all these dishes from the different stalls, and all of them tasted the same, only one of the stalls had a better taste. However, to us, it was still quite bland. The smelly tofu was not very smelly when it was brought to the table. However, when you put it into your mouth, it was damn smelly. The smelly taste was not that kind of a flavorful taste. The smell tofu tasted like a longkang smell, like those big dirty drains choked for months, and the taste was awful. The curry mee was okay. The rojak was a bit watery and the prawn paste, the rojak prawn paste, was not flavorful either. The yakitori of two sticks of beef wasn’t very nice too, and it was a bit expensive, costing RM32 for the two steaks of beef yakitori.

The dish that stood out in this hawker stall was the mala xiang guo, which was flavorful - the chicken wings were nice and nicely BBQ'd. There's also an oyster store, which we bought the fried oysters in a Thai style. The oyster was also nice and it was fresh too. The hawker stores also accept Touch & Go with cashless payment which was nice.

We were incredibly lucky to arrive early, around 5:45, just as the hawker stalls were setting up. It was great to be able to get a table for our group of nine. Usually, it's hard to find seating, especially with such a big group, but we were able to snag three tables and sit together, enjoying the early evening air.

It was so cool at that time of the day, with the sun beginning to set. But just as we were finishing our meal, the rain came! The hawker stalls quickly brought out their big, heavy awnings, but it took a little time to set them up. We had to run to a nearby shop for shelter, and our food and seats were already wet. But luckily, we were almost done with our meal.

Overall, the Jonker Street Night Market is a must-visit for anyone travelling to Melaka. It's a vibrant and exciting experience that offers a unique glimpse into local culture and cuisine. It's definitely a community-focused outdoor dining experience that captures the essence of a typical Asian night market! We recommend going early to avoid the crowds and get a good spot, but be prepared for a possible downpour. Also, be prepared for the taste to be different from what you might be used to. It’s a great place to explore and try new things, even if it doesn't all hit the spot.

This is a vibrant night market but expect to be paying tourist prices for food. You won't necessarily get a wholesome dinner here but what you will frequently see are: dragon beard candy, fruit smoothies, soft drinks and BBQ seafood (octopus). There are also plenty of stalls selling trashy toys and souvenirs.

There are a lot of stalls selling wide varieties of mostly seafoods like tiger prawn, cockles, oyster, abalone, lala, baby crabs, Portuguese style baked fish, kangkung with squid and many more.. there are both outdoor and indoor seatings. You can sit at one place and order foods from different stalls. This place is not along the jonker street, it is actually at a small alley and another road by jonker street, which is behind the karaoke stage. Just to highlight this night market is only opened for business on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening till late night!

Night market that happens Friday, Saturday and Sunday, along Jalan Hang Jebat and partial Jalan Tokong.
Expect stalls selling diverse local snacks, drinks, mainly local Chinese food.
Also are stalls selling souvenirs, toys, accessories etc.
The pedestrian passage between stalls is narrow and shoppers will find themselves in crowded situation during public holiday when visitors flock into Melaka.
Seafood food stalls are gathered at Jalan Tokong.

The fried rice/pasta, coffee and fried chicken are nice. As for the oyster omelette and duck egg char kuey teow... forget it .. don't waste your money. They're terrible.

烧鱼不错价格也 ok,炒粿条还 ok Lah....

重点是环境, 在吵杂繁忙的夜市吃吃喝喝是很棒的。
