In Batu Pahat, mention ban jian kueh and people will only point you at one direction... To this very old school kopitiam somewhere in the heart of Batu Pahat old town. It's so famous that instead of the kopitiam name, the locals just call it "Ban Jian Kueh". The name ban jian kueh is synonymous with this little stall manned by an elderly uncle who plied his trade at this kopitiam.

I've asked some of my customers in Batu Pahat and all of them actually praised this place - no mixed reviews! For me, it was just a matter of timing to taste this legendary ban jian kueh or apam balik (in Malay).

We arrived in front of the corner shoplot shortly after 12pm one day.. the uncle was busy cooking his famous dish at that time. After taking our seat, I walked up to him and ordered one piece - he looked at me and said "I've got a lot of orders.. it might take 30 min before your turn". However he was being friendly despite the queue. The queue for takeaway was quite long but I was determined to taste it no matter what so I said "it's OK.. I'll wait"

I observed the uncle.. he's a man of few words, prefer to focus on what he does best. One can easily see that his work flow is very systematic, resulting from decades of repetition. Ordering a cup of teh si (just normal only) whole waiting.. he finally sent out order over on a piece of paper.

Leo's verdict - I have to say that this is probably the best apam balik I'd ever tasted in my life. It is not those mini apam balik but still it was crispy on the outside while soft and aromatic on the inside. It has this old school taste to it... One bite and our eyes were instantly brightened up. Needless to say, the whole piece of ban jian kueh was polished in blink of an eye, and this was despite we had our lunch earlier.

If there was a place that you have to try while in Batu Pahat, this will be the one!

Well, this is the first time that I need to queue up for more than 30mins to buy local version of butter/peanut pamcake in my life - yes it is worth the waiting! and it is so very popular that phone-ordering is a norm to cut short of the waiting time for getting a bite of the best pancake in Batu Pahat - their regular customers even order in bulk! Very tasty and crunchy with them thin crust and come in big size (60cm diameter?) cooked in copper pan. Highly recommended!

A flavor that was remembered since young. The pancake has just enough saltiness, and good mixture of sugar and peanuts. Its thickness is just nice, not too thick till the middle portion is not well cooked. Its bottom side and crust are somewhat crispy, which make it quite unique. Half a pan is good for an afternoon snack, but one might need to order whole pan as proper meal.

バトゥパハで一番おいしい麵煎糕の屋台。
毎日正午頃から16時すぎまでやっていますが、人気なので売り切れ閉店に注意。
細かく刻んだピーナッツが入った麵煎糕はトラディショナルなパンケーキのようで、あったかい出来たての味は塩気と甘さがたまらない。
日によっては併設のコピティアムがやっていないこともあるので、飲み物を用意して。あと手が汚れるのでおしぼりやティッシュも持ってくると良いでしょう。
